There are several ways you can get to Puerto Viejo, the one you choose will depend on your budget, how much time you have, and where you are coming from. This page will help you navigate the transportation options available to get to Puerto Viejo. You can choose between a rafting trip, the public bus, a shared shuttle, or a flight to Limón with Sansa Airlines then a taxi down to the Puerto Viejo area. You could also rent a car or take a private taxi. We will outline the various options below and also provide information about transportation between Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero and crossing the border to or from Bocas del Toro, Panama. Remember as you are planning your trip that depending on your flight times you may need to spend the night of your arrival and the night before your departure in San Jose due to the long travel time from Puerto Viejo to the airport.

RAFTING TRIP TO PUERTO VIEJO

If you are up for an adventure and you’re not in a hurry a rafting trip down the Pacuare River is a fun and exciting way to get to Puerto Viejo! Caribe Shuttle and Exploradores Outdoors both offer rafting trips to Puerto Viejo from San Jose or the Arenal/La Fortuna area. It’s an all day trip beginning at 6 AM from San Jose or 5:30 AM from Arenal/La Fortuna and ending in Puerto Viejo around 5:30 PM where they will drop you off right here at our front gate at Hidden Jungle Beach House. The price is around $100 US dollars. They provide breakfast and lunch, they also take care of your luggage and provide transportation from your original location to the starting point for the rafting trip and then right to our front gate, a pretty good deal considering that a shared shuttle costs about $70 and it doesn’t include breakfast, lunch, or a rafting adventure! RENTING A CAR OR TAKING A PRIVATE TAXI TO PUERTO VIEJO

These will be the most expensive transportation options to Puerto Viejo. A private taxi or shuttle from San Jose to Puerto Viejo is between $250-$350 US dollars. You can get one at the airport or you can book one ahead of time. If you want to rent a car Adobe and Enterprise are good options for rental cars in Costa Rica. Beware of car rental deals in Costa Rica that seem too good to be true, they usually are. There are lots of taxes and mandatory insurance required for rental cars in Costa Rica, the fees add up quickly and can double or even triple the advertised daily rate. Make sure to confirm that taxes and insurance are included in the listed price when making your reservation so there are no surprises when it comes time to pick up the vehicle. The drive from San Jose to Puerto Viejo takes between 4.5-7 hours depending on traffic, roadwork, and weather conditions. It’s not recommended to make the drive at night, especially during rainy season or if it’s your first time driving in Costa Rica. The mountain road is dark and dangerous, there are lots of curves and visibility is not great, especially on a rainy or foggy night and rainstorms can appear from out of nowhere. It gets dark by 6 PM all year long in Costa Rica so plan accordingly!

TAKING THE BUS TO PUERTO VIEJO

The public Mepe bus is the most affordable transportation option to Puerto Viejo. The buses leave from terminal Atlantico Norte in downtown San Jose and the ticket costs about $13 US dollars. TAKING THE SHUTTLE TO PUERTO VIEJO

Taking a shuttle to Puerto Viejo is a great combination of convenience and affordability. They will pick you up and drop you off right here at our front gate at Hidden Jungle Beach House. There is shuttle service between most of the popular destinations in Costa Rica, the shuttle from San Jose to Puerto Viejo costs between $65-$75 US dollars and trip takes between 5-7 hours depending on traffic, roadwork, and weather conditions. FLYING TO PUERTO VIEJO

The fastest way to get to Puerto Viejo is to fly to Limón and then take a taxi, you could also take the bus or a shuttle. Sansa currently has three flights per day between San Jose and Puerto Viejo, the flight takes about 40 minutes. Sansa flights from San Jose to Puerto Viejo are between $110-$140 US dollars and the bus, taxi, and shuttle prices range from $5-$60 US dollars.
