Traveling can be tough in some parts of the world if you’re vegetarian or vegan. Fortunately Puerto Viejo is an excellent vegan/vegetarian destination! There is such a big vegan and vegetarian presence here that almost all of the restaurants in town have plenty of options for everyone, we also have several fully vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Fresh fruit is everywhere, including exotic fruits that are hard to find outside of the tropics like biriba, zapote colombiano, caimito, mangosteen, and more! We have several vegan shopping options including the Bio Mercado and Namu Organiko, both of which are located in downtown Puerto Viejo. Here are some vegan and vegetarian restaurants that you won’t want to miss!
Jammin Comunidad Vegana – This is more than just a restaurant, Jammin is a community center serving fantastic vegan food made with love. With a fully vegan menu of Jamaican inspired dishes, open mic nights, farmer’s markets and book exchanges, this is the number one vegan restaurant in Puerto Viejo that should definitely be on your list. The owner Temps has a smile that lights up the room and his warm, positive energy is infectious so make sure you say hello! He was born in the UK to Jamaican parents and was cooking his unique style of vegan Jamaican cuisine in various locations around the world before landing in Puerto Viejo. We are lucky to have him around, don’t miss this wonderful fully vegan restaurant in Puerto Viejo! It’s on the main road on the far end of town across from Manu bike shop.
Rio’s Vegan Foods – It has been such a pleasure watching Rio’s Vegan Foods grow from a little stand outside the farmer’s market to a permanent location on the main road in downtown Puerto Viejo! You can also find their products being sold at various grocery stores and markets around the area. Don’t miss their vegan empanadas and pizzas, the curried chickpea empanada is my favorite. They also make a fantastic vegan mayonnaise, I have a jar in my refrigerator at all times! They still set up their stand outside of the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings where you can buy all of their tasty vegan treats and meet the lovely couple behind Rio’s Vegan Foods in person, Simone has a smile so big and bright you might go blind! We love Rio’s Vegan Foods, make sure you stop by at least once during your visit to Puerto Viejo!
Amaser – This beautiful yoga center and vegetarian/vegan eatery sits on top of a hill and has a breathtaking view of the jungle with the Caribbean sea as a backdrop. Serving breakfast and lunch from 7 AM-2 PM, Amaser also functions as a co-working space, a peaceful oasis for remote workers visiting Puerto Viejo. Only about a 15-20 walk from Hidden Jungle Beach House, Amaser has public yoga classes, spa and wellness offerings, and a truly terrific vegetarian menu with lots of vegan options. Put Amaser on your radar, it’s well worth the journey to visit this lovely refuge! Click HERE to visit their website.
Como en mi Casa Art Cafe – Their location on the second floor above a butcher shop makes this vegetarian and vegan cafe a physical manifestation of the tolerant attitude towards coexistence we enjoy here in Puerto Viejo. Serving breakfast and lunch with a bird’s eye view on the outdoor balcony, there is also a colorful indoor seating area is bursting with creativity. I love sitting on the balcony at Como en mi Casa and watching the world go by with the ocean in the background, it’s a beautiful way to start the day! Excellent vegan and vegetarian menu, don’t miss this spot!
Sanito (Tostas) – Located in Playa Chiquita next to Panaderia Vida Sana, this vegan/vegetarian cafe and market makes an excellent falafel! Also offering salads, bowls, and veggie burgers, this is a nice stop after a bike ride out to the beaches in Playa Chiquita. With a relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff, I love sitting here for a snack in the afternoon. You can buy bread directly from the bakery in the mornings as well!
Grow – This vegetarian/vegan restaurant and bar has an incredible view! Wide open and overlooking the ocean at Chino Beach in downtown Puerto Viejo, Grow serves a fresh and creative menu of top-notch vegan and vegetarian food. They offer an inventive drink menu with non-alcoholic options and a great selection of beer and wine, coffee, tea, juices, and smoothies. Serving lunch and dinner six days a week until 9 PM, this is absolutely a don’t-miss spot for vegans and vegetarians visiting Puerto Viejo!
You can also click HERE to see some of my other favorite restaurants in the Puerto Viejo area. The restaurants on this list are not strictly vegetarian but almost all of them have plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians. There is a fantastic fruit and vegetable market called the Mercadito on the main road just as you cross the bridge into Puerto Viejo from Playa Negra, they also sell locally made vegan/vegetarian snacks, hummus, and hot sauce. It’s a great spot for one-stop shopping! Also make sure to check out the fruit vendors along the side of the road, from Playa Negra all the way out to Manzanillo you can find a delicious assortment of exotic fruits for sale from local farmers. We really do live in a plant-based paradise!
