Tortuguero is a great destination to visit before or after Puerto Viejo! It’s a very special place, especially during turtle season when you can take night tours to watch the sea turtles laying their eggs. Unless you fly there with Sansa Airlines a boat ride will be required to get to Tortuguero, there are no cars or motorized vehicles in the village which definitely adds to the charm. Moin is the closest boat dock to Puerto Viejo with boats going to Tortuguero, the boat ride from Moin is about three hours. It’s a beautiful ride and you will see lots of wildlife along the way, it’s an excursion in itself! There are also boats from La Pavona, the boat ride from there is about an hour and a half but that option doesn’t make sense going to or from Puerto Viejo unless you have a car, it’s so far away and there are so many bus transfers to get there.
