It’s hard to come up with a one-word response to that question! Hidden Jungle Beach House is not quite a hotel, it’s not quite a hostel either. When people think of a hostel they tend to think of a big, noisy space with dorm rooms and people partying all night long, kind of dirty with questionable bathrooms. That’s definitely not us! It’s inaccurate to call us a homestay because the implication there is that you will be staying in the same house as the owner or participating in a cultural exchange with a local family and that is not what’s happening here. Although I do live in another house on the same property, and you will definitely learn a lot about the local culture while you are staying here! You are staying in a home, but ‘homestay’ is not the right word for what we are. We’re kind of like a bed and breakfast except there’s no one making you breakfast in the morning. We do have a large and well-equipped kitchen for our guests to use though, and we have free-range eggs for sale from our chickens so you can definitely make your own breakfast! Can we call it a ‘bed and make your own breakfast?’ No, too many words. The most accurate word to describe us would probably be ‘guesthouse’ but I’ve noticed that word has confused people as well, who think it’s a private rental for an individual or small family. While the whole house can be rented privately with advance notice, we most often operate as a shared traveler’s accommodation. Our Caribbean-style home has five private bedrooms that are rented nightly and weekly. There is a big shared kitchen, two shared bathrooms and three shared showers, two of which have hot water. We have lots of communal areas and workspaces, places to sit inside and outside, and high speed fiber optic internet that reaches all around. We are a jungle travel oasis, simple and authentic Caribbean lodging in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. But we are more than just a guesthouse! We are a Caribbean homestead with chickens and guinea fowl, we have a big garden full of medicinal and edible plants. We offer garden tours and medicinal plant classes. Hidden away in the jungle only steps away from a beautiful black sand beach, we are exactly what our name implies. We are Hidden Jungle Beach House!
